What is Judo?

Judo is an Olympic sport and martial art that originated in Japan over 100 years ago. Today judo is the most widely practiced martial art worldwide. The word judo itself means, “the gentle way.” It is a grappling martial art that does NOT involve kicks and punches, but rather incorporates throws, pins, and submission holds.

Not only is judo one of the best forms of exercise available, it is also a very practical form of self-defense.  Among confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to focus, regular judo practice also develops a high degree of body awareness and coordination that makes for a healthier, happier person.

During your initial training, it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed with new terminology and strange body movements. Over the first few months, students will be introduced to the basics of judo including falls, throws, pins, and grappling techniques.

In addition to learning basic judo skills, our goal is to help increase your level of general conditioning, fitness, and coordination.  Each class will consist of stretching, conditioning exercises, judo skill training, and basic judo knowledge.

Why Judo?

Unlike any other sport, judo is unique in instilling in its students: confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to focus. Judo also develops a level of body awareness and coordination that makes every participant a stronger, healthier and better all-around individual.

If you or your child could benefit from any of the following:

  • Greater academic achievement
  • Unshakable self-respect
  • Increased strength and fitness, in both mind and body
  • Increased confidence and self-discipline
